LUMPIA RECIPE WITH INSTRUCTIONS:

Let me know if you want to play and are willing to be on Good Day Sacramento.  The staff will review all the recipes received.  We are looking for your own creations.  You can’t buy any from the store and fry them up for this.  You have to be able to make the lumpia if I were to ask you (I won’t but I may ask you on TV about your methods).  I want to teach everyone about lumpia and encourage them to make it themselves and not be afraid!  Please no professional chefs so our home cooks can have a chance to shine.

If you are selected, you will get an email confirming you are in the competition.  We get sooo many recipes and have to keep it to about a dozen participants.  Once selected, you will bring your homemade lumpia (the same as the recipe you submitted), cooked, to the station.  It has to be cooked before you walk into the station.  Make at least a dozen pieces or more – enough for our judges.  Sauces are optional.  Lumpia will be judged on taste, texture and appearance of the lumpia alone.  Our winner will take home the trophy and have bragging rights for the year!!!  The winning recipe will be posted on our website as well so you have to be willing to share it.  It will be posted on the Tina and Julissa blog on our website www.gooddaysacramento.com.

You will be contacted IF your recipe is selected.  You will get more instructions once we have all competitors. This is live TV – not taped.  This is just for fun and not considered a professional contest.  Have fun!  Tina

lumpia contest 7th Annual Lumpia Competition

If you think you make the best lumpia in Northern California, you may consider competing in the 7th Annual Lumpia Competition which will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 on Good Day Sacramento! This is only for fun! I’m limiting this to about a dozen entries so if you want to play, I’ll need you to email me your name/address/contact phone number AND your lumpia recipe with complete instructions (list ingredients with exact measurements and step by step instructions). Email the information and recipe to gooddaytina@kmaxtv.com.

Each participant will be required to bring in a minimum of a dozen cooked lumpia to the Good Day Sacramento studio on Wednesday, November 21, 2012. I will email you instructions once you’re selected.

These have to be original recipes. I know many people are protective of their recipes but the winner’s recipe will be posted on our website. Lumpia is such a wonderful part of the Filipino culture and when others get excited to learn how to make it, that’s a good thing!

I will contact each participant directly. Please make sure you are definitely going to participate. Questions? Email me at gooddaytina@kmaxtv.com.

This is open to viewers only – sorry no professionals.

Cristina Ruiz’s Winning Lumpia Recipe from Good Day’s 8th Annual Lumpia Competition

3 lbs ground pork
1 pk Chinese sausage (chopped)
4 carrots (chopped)
3 stalks celery (chopped)
1 onion (chopped)
1 can water chestnuts (chopped)
1 bunch green onion (chopped)
1 tbsp garlic powder
2 tsp salt
2 tsp pepper
2 tbsp oyster sauce

Instructions on how to prepare lumpia….
Take all the ingredients and mix together in a bowl, (this can actually be done a day before so all the flavors can blend together). Before you start to roll lumpia, first you need to set up your rolling station. I usually like to roll mine on a cutting board but a plate will do just fine. You will also need a little bowl of water for sealing the lumpia. A container for your finished product and last but not least some lumpia wrapper (I prefer Menlo but you can use any brand you like). I usually cut off the edges and separate the sheets before I start rolling. Now your ready to start rolling..first you take a sheet of wrapper, lay it down with a corner facing you, take a tbsp of the meat mixture and place it in the center shaped like a little log. Fold the corner of the wrapper closest to you over the meat and pull back towards you so meat is secure. Fold both edges in and finish rolling forward. When you get to the end put a little water on wrapper and seal the lumpia. After you wrap all your lumpia you can freeze them for later use or you can put them in the fridge if you plan to fry them the same day. Cooking lumpia is simple, I usually deep fry them in vegetable oil until golden brown. You can enjoy them plain or with your choice of dipping sauces.
